Type Locality and Naming

Along Naucats, N. Nuratau Ridge. N.R. Asatullaev et al. (1970f), span and age clarified by R.R. Usmanov et al. (1989f). Stratotype Along Naucats.

Synonym: Naukatsayskaya Formation, Наукатсайская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Upper part (Thickness of 100-130m) - rhythmically interbedded quartz sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites), quartz-mica shales.

Lower part (Thickness of 60-70m) - thin-bedded variegated argillaceous shales, silty claystone (aleurolitic argillites) with layers of thin-bedded feldspar-quartz siltstone (aleurolites) and silty-claystone (aleuropelites) with horizontal and oblique wavy stratification and hieroglyphs.

Total Thickness 200m (165; 460m).


Lithology Pattern: 
Clayey sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

According to A.A., the lower boundary with the Dzhazbulak Fm is conformable

Upper contact

The upper boundary is conformable with the Karachatal Fm (Karakchatau, Mulla-Malya basin).

Regional extent

South slope of North Nuratau Ridge; eastern part of S. Nuratau Ridge; Gobduntau Mountains. According to R.R. Usmanov et al. (1989f.), it corresponds to the upper part of the Alyanguz Fm and to the Mulla-Malya Fm in the understanding of I.A. Pyanova (371). (165; 443; 460).

Upper part – Wenlock (Homerian) graptolites - Testograptus testis (Barr.), Monoclimacis flumendosae (Gort.), Cyrtograptus radians Törnq. and others.

Lower part – Contains Wenlock (Sheinwood) graptolites - Monograptus riccartonensis Lapw., M. firmus Bouček., M. priodon (Broun.); chitinozoa - Linochitina erratica (Eis.), Cingulochitina cingulata (Eis.), Calpichitina densa (Eis.), Margachitina margaritana (Eis).
